Hoo…Ray…For….Obamawood!

In advance, I know the title doesn’t have a lot to do with this story.  Hollywood hasn’t given me much lately to write about, so I just decided to use it today.  I invite you to give me better titles in the comment section.  I will pick a winner and  rename the article later today!  How’s that for “sharing the wealth…?”  Obama’s rubbing off on me too!

In today’s USA Today, we read about how private pay has shrunk to all time lows (adjusted in today’s dollars) while government handouts are at all time highs!  The article goes on to say that while some of this was accelerated by the last recession, most of it has to do with a long term trend of increasing  government spending.  I love the quote at the close of this article:

Economist David Henderson of the conservative Hoover Institution says a shift from private wages to government benefits saps the economy of dynamism. “People are paid for being rather than for producing,” he says.

This is simply unsustainable.  Europe is in full scale reform mode.  The irony is that to even think of supporting these programs, private income HAS TO INCREASE in scale with the Government Programs because the Government depends on private tax revenues in the first place.

I know that this seems like common sense, but that doesn’t seem to be in large supply.  We’ve all had a moment we needed help in this life.  Notice the keyword in that sentence is moment.  The Government is making up programs (next you will be getting paid to eat Triscuits in some new safety study by the FDA!) and it is sapping our ability to invest back in the private sector.

You need only look in the mirror to look at Greece (producers of little else besides the Olympics and Ouzo in the last 50 years) to see what happens when people get too used to these programs.  They are rioting in the streets over Greek Government Cheese (and other things) rather than realizing that there are endless possibilities if you only embrace them.  If we do not change (all of us including yours truly) in the way we think about Money, Possessions and the Government’s role in all of this, this will eventually the mirror we see ourselves in.  Where’s the Ouzo?
