What Your Car Says About Your Politics

It is no surprise to find when we pass a Smart Car (because let’s be serious, you have never been passed by a Smart Car) that we believe the driver is a post-hippie, global warming believing, vegan scrawny  liberal.  We all have our stereotypes for cars and the drivers political persuasion, we have just never had a study to prove our supposition’s wrong or right, until now.

Strategic Vision a marketing and industry forecasting firm has studied the issue of cars and their owners political beliefs.  The findings are not too surprising.

A study of 38,000 people showed that Republicans favorite car tend to be the Ford Mustang convertible followed by the Audi A8 Sudan, the Mercedes GL class, the Ford Expedition then the Ford F-150.

Democrats favorite car is (image this being read with a lisp) Honda Civic Hybrid, Volvo C-30, the Nissan Leaf, the Acura TSX Sports Wagon (that’s an oxymoron–Sport and Wagon) and the Ford Fiesta.

The study further found Republicans tend drive convertibles by a wide margin over the Democrat rivals, Republicans accounting for 69% while Democrats are only at 17%.  Most Fiesta’s, Leaf’s and Smart Cars don’t come in convertibles though.

Ford was very happy with this study and plans to use it in interesting ways to affect sells to the divergent political ideologies.  Ford wants to find a way to get more Republicans into hybrids while getting more Democrats into convertibles.  I would recommend to leave well enough alone, some things are too hard to change.

This study brings about a couple of observations.  First, to the Democrat men: Do you think a woman would rather ride in a Mustang convertible or a Nissan Leaf?  OK, the no shower, no deodorant, tree hugging girl you would date would prefer the Leaf.  Second, this does bring up for discussion the question of the potential absence of gonadal fortitude of the Democrat men.  The last observation I will make with this study is Democrat vs. Republican and supporting American made products.  None of the favor cars of the Democrats were from one of the Big Three, except the Focus which was probably only purchased by Democrats who could not afford the imports.  This could be from their arrogant attitudes and being better than buying the mundane domestic car.  Their cars must match their imported wines.  Notice though the Chevy Volt was not on the list! The car that was a favorite of the President and a car financially supported by the President’s stimulus.

GM struck out even among the American-made loving Republicans.  Why did Ford do so well, while GM and Chrysler got shut out?  Could it be, Ford is the only US automaker who did not take a government handout?  GM and Chrysler have a couple of cool Muscle Cars, the Camaro and the Challenger and Charger.  Each also have a long line of trucks, so was there a price to pay for the bailout, at least with Republicans?  The bailout may have been bad for GM and Chrysler, Republicans could be staying away from them because of the bailout and Democrats are just too good to buy domestic anyway.

What cars do I have?  I am a rabid conservative (no surprise to our readers) and I have a hated and dreaded SUV, a 2006 Tahoe and I also have a 69′ GTO in my garage, waiting to be restored.  I do not have any new cars for three reasons, I am the son of a GM worker so I am loyal to GM, but I will not buy from the company who is owned by Obama and his friends, in Nebraska the taxes on a new vehicle will choke a horse, and GM hasn’t put out a good manly product (outside the Camaro and their Pickups) in forever.

The study is just for fun, ultimately but GM and Chrysler should take to heart the fact they weren’t on the board here.

Skip, glad I stumbled on to your website. Like you I am a die hard Conservative and come from a long, long, line of GM employees. I currently own a 2006 Tahoe and a 2007 Saturn Aura XR. When it’s time to buy again, I will not know what to do. I feel loyalty to GM, but not Gov’t Motors and not the unions. What’s a guy to do?
